Sparrow with Personality

Kelly Cherry

Out of rosemary he leapt
and sauntered to our feet
where we rested on a bench
overlooking the lake
while whitecaps sported in
the wind. He came closer,
tilting his head, so we
could see the soft fuzz
on his face, as if he were
a teenage boy. He was
not frightened—though, again
like a teenage boy, he would
not let us pick him up.
Now we look for him
in bush or branches, in air
or on the lawn bordered
by blooms as glossy as
if a gardener slicked
petals with brilliantine.
