Joshua Trees

Sheryl Slocum

bathe their arms
           in wine of blue;
such deep drunkenness
           makes a creature steady
for hundreds of years
           quaffing in slow swallows
until all the body
           is a mouth:
hollow, fibrous trunk,
           hollowed flower panicles—
everything a goblet
           for sun or rain,
starlight or snow
           falling
onto spiky palms
