ADDRESS
Faith and Imagination

Christopher Herbert

This address, delivered at Wells Cathedral, lays out a parallel between faith, in its reach towards the inexpressible, and the imagination that enters not only into the making of works of visual and poetic art, but also into recent developments in mathematics. Faith and imagination share an aspect of playfulness, joy, and delight. Both are nevertheless costly, involving toil and discipline. And each has its limits, for neither is itself the object of the quest they have in common.
