Awaiting Execution

Michael Mott

Awaiting execution six followers
of the late rabble rouser
were intent only upon one another

as if the prison courtyard
were a walled garden,
the gray helmets of the guard
gray helmets of lupines

as if banners, torn posters,
parts of the evening sky
were hedges of roses.

The interrogations were over.
The morning would come soon enough.
They were talking together of secret things.
