Anglican Theological Review
Robert MacSwain is Associate Professor of Theology at the School of Theology, The University of the South, Sewanee, TN. He studied philosophy at Liberty University and the University of Idaho, and theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh. After teaching religion at Brooks School in North Andover, MA, he entered the ordination process in the Diocese of East Carolina and completed his clinical pastoral education at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. This was followed by a year of Anglican studies at Virginia Theological Seminary, as well as an internship as a research assistant to the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace. Ordained in Canterbury Cathedral, he spent three years in parish ministry at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kinston, NC. In 2004, he was awarded an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellowship and began doctoral studies in philosophical theology at the University of Durham. While in Durham, he served as Ramsey Fellow and Chaplain at St. Chad’s College from 2005 to 2008. After his supervisor moved to the University of St. Andrews in 2007, he completed his doctorate there (Ph.D., 2010). From 2016 to 2017, he was a visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity School and a resident at Harvard’s Center for the Study of World Religions. In 2019-2020, he was on research leave funded by the Templeton Religion Trust, and in 2023-2024, he was a visiting scholar at Vanderbilt Divinity School and a visiting fellow at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge.On the faculty at Sewanee since 2009, Rob’s teaching and research combine philosophy, theology, ethics, literature, and spirituality, with a particular focus on the interactions of these disciplines within the Anglican tradition. He is also a priest of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, a dispersed religious community of the Anglican Communion founded at Cambridge University in 1913. Rob has previously served as Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Anglican Theological Review, Inc., and has participated as Sewanee’s Institutional Representative to the ATR‘s Board of Trustees. Elected in 2024, Rob’s first edition as Co-Editor is the recently published Winter 2025 edition of the Journal. We look forward to welcoming Rob back to the academic and theological community of the ATR, where his scholarship, leadership, and dedication to the Anglican tradition continue to inspire students and colleagues alike. His contributions as Co-Editor of the Anglican Theological Review further enhance his legacy as a valued member of both the university and the broader Anglican intellectual tradition. |
